On the Mac RoundTable I join Katie Floyd, Bart Busschots, and Victor Cajiao to discuss Apple’s disappearing anti-virus tech document which leads to a discussion on viruses, malware, and phising. Google Calendar adds CalDAV support and what calendar solutions we use. Adobe is going to be a no-show at Macworld 2009 and we discuss graphic and photo editing alternatives. Apple’s “Black Friday” deals (or lack thereof). iPhone / iPod Touch application picks.

Mac Roundtable

On The MacCore podcast I join Katie and Victor again to be part of the Third Annual Holiday Geek Gift Guide. We spoke about some of our favorite products that should be on every Geek's holiday wish list.

Cyber security and internet safety on this episode of The Mac Attack.

Please review the show:
Write a review on iTunes
Thank you!

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month. Even though you may be up on cyber security, think about your kids, or your parents, or even where you work. Think about the people in your life that may not be as computer savvy as you....

Cyber security and internet safety tips:

  • Install all system updates from Apple
  • Never shop online, unless you are familiar with the retailer you're dealing with
  • Avoid Phishing scams by simply not trusting any financial advice or warning sent in e-mail form. If your bank needs information from you, they will call you, not ask you to e-mail them or fill out an online form
  • Don't: create passwords using personal information or information someone could guess
  • Don't: create a password using words in a dictionary, no matter the language
  • Never use the default password or a common password
  • Talk to your children about their use of the computer and discuss any possible dangers they may encounter online
  • Discuss and set guidelines or rules for computer use with your children. Post these rules by the computer as a reminder
  • Keep the computer in a common area of your home, so that children’s activities can be easily monitored
  • Limit time allotted on the computer - watch to see if your child is withdrawing from friends and family
  • Use the Internet with your children
  • Know who your children's online friends are and supervise their chat areas
  • Consider routing your child’s email into your own email account first in order to screen any unwanted email messages
  • Mac OS X parental controls let you manage your child's use of the computer, the applications and the Internet. - parental controls can be found in system preferences.
  • Back up important files and store them in a secure place in a different location than your computer

Apple adapters:
For all current Macs DVI to VGA
Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini DVI to Video Adapter
MacBook and iMac Mini-DVI to Video Adapter
MacBook Air Video Adapters

Once you have your computer connected you'll want to set your computer to video mirroring mode via the Display Preference pane.

The simplest way to get sound from your computer to your flat screen tv is to use an 1/8'' stereo audio cable (You can tell it's stereo because of the two stripes around the connector). The ends, or connectors look like what you would see on a pair of headphones. The 1/8" jack on your computer is usually marked by a headphones graphic.

To get audio to your standard tv - you will probably need to use a 1/8" audio jack to rca adapter... Here's an example 1/8" Mini Stereo to RCA

From the Mac Core web site: "Corey and Katie sat down with Steve Stanger of The Mac Attack and devoted a special podcast to the topic of becoming Apple Certified. This is a little different show for us, but we’ve gotten a ton of listener feedback on this topic and thought it warranted its own show. Steve and Corey talk about the reasons they choose to become Apple Certified, talk about the reasons to become certified, the different types of certifications Apple offers and answers listener questions about the certification process."

The show is back... Thanks for all of the emails about the show over the last couple of months.

After doing 90 shows of Mac tips tricks and hints. I'm stopping production on the mac attack. I'm not ruling out starting the show again at some point in the future. When that may be, I don't know.

I just feel at this time I would like to go on and try something new... Maybe bring back my music podcast, "The Loud Room" or try producing something completely different. When I do start up something new, I'll post a note on the mac attack web site.

Thanks to the generous contributions from some of you the web site and show will remain online for the foreseeable future.

The one thing that I didn't expect when I started TMA is the number of new friends I would make because of the show. I really enjoyed talking to a lot of you when you caught me on skype or through the emails and messages that you sent and left.

I also got to know some great podcasters and bloggers during the last two 1/2 years. Not only were they helpful when I had questions about producing the show, but they became good friends outside of podcasting also.

This really isn't good bye.... I'll still be popping up here and there on other podcasts and I'll have something new going soon....

Thanks for all of the emails. Everything is OK. It took me a little longer then expected to get settled in after the move. Plus my hours at work changed so I was adjusting to the new schedule (I know, blah, blah, blah) :-)

I will have a new show out by the end of the month.

Talk to you soon.
